Introducing ourselves

You’re currently reading the first issue of the Stratup.ai newsletter, a publication intended to make you a more knowledgeable startup founder/business owner.

We’ll do this by delivering the best insights and news our team can find, 2x a week (Tuesdays and Fridays).

Because we can’t expect to be great right off the bat, we’re going to take in as much feedback over the coming weeks and months. If you’re familiar with startup lingo, think of these first few editions as an MVP “minimum viable product”.

Taking a principled approach to this newsletter, I think the following quote is relevant:

Upon the subject of education, not presuming to dictate any plan or system respecting, I can only say that I view it as the most important subject we as people can be engaged in.

-Abraham Lincoln, March 9, 1832

Paraphrasing Seneca, living according to mimicry, not reason, is a common error. This assists in establishing our educational framework.

As time passes, we’ll evolve to provide more tailored information to better assist you in solving your problems. This newsletter will be a combination of curated resources that either keep you up to date or help improve your skills in domains relevant to you.

We also plan on doing founder interviews, and more. If you are interested in being featured in our newsletter, feel free to contact us here. I hope you enjoy today’s edition.

Quote of the Day

“Ideas are a commodity. Execution of them is not”

Michael Dell, CEO of Dell

Thread of the day

Three startup news stories to start your day

  1. Armada, a data startup founded in 2022, raises $55 Million. (December 11) Forbes

  2. X-Prize Announces Largest Competition Prize in History at $101 Million (November 29) The prize is focused on improving human “healthspan” and lifespan through research to better understand biological aging and age-related disease. XPRIZE

  3. AI tool video editing startup PIKA raises $55 Million (November 28, 2023) Tech Crunch

Summary of the interviews of 10 startup founders. Here’s what they had in common.

After reading ten interviews of founders from sites like Hampton, Starterstory, and Startups, this is what I learned.

Though there may be a limit to the value of reading many somewhat cursory interviews of founders across a wide range of industries, and the value may be somewhat higher when reading interviews of founders within the domain your startup is/will be in, I recommend you to explore founder-interviews yourself. These are just the common themes I gleaned after reading 10 or so interviews earlier this past week.

  1. You don’t necessarily need a large team to have significant revenue and profits.

  2. Sometimes the business taps into a macro trend.

  3. Often it’s a clear and simple problem being solved, but in a not-so-obvious way.

  4. The founder worked within the industry for some time before starting a company.

  5. The founder is good at finding talent or hiring someone who is.

  6. Utilizes X/Twitter to drive leads.

  7. Reads a lot.

  8. Develops an MVP and iterates quickly.

  9. Delegates more as time goes on.

  10. Reinvests positive cashflow

  11. Depending on the company, focuses on SEO.

  12. Focuses on networking, e.g. at conferences or LinkedIn.

  13. Cultivates partnerships with other businesses.

  14. Builds for the long term.

  15. Utilizes core competency to address low-hanging fruit in industries where your core competency is underrepresented.

  16. They often bootstrapped.

  17. Although a saturated market is proof that demand is there, working on underserved or unsaturated areas may be a better long-term strategy.

Resources for UX and Websites

As a business founder, web design may be an important component of your company. Here are four resources we found that may help.

  1. Webflow (free for students)

  2. Figma (also free for students)

  3. Adobe Suite

  4. Onepagelove (Free to use)
