Focus
For many, especially the youth, one of the factors holding them back from creativity, originality, and productivity is the overuse and misuse of phones and social media. Distractions hinder individuals who aspire to work on startups.
Assessing your situation is simple. Check your screen time. (As well as the distribution of apps used.)
I was at a bookstore recently, and after perusing the shelves for an hour or so, a book that appeared relevant was Stolen Focus (Hari).
It’s by a journalist who attempts to make sense of the information overload and “stolen focus” that we face today more than ever.
Distractions not only reduce productivity during the distraction, but also for a significant time after returning to the original task, Hari finds.
From a productivity standpoint, many underestimate the impact screen time has.
Social apps are algorithmically incentivized to retain you for as long as possible, diminishing your productive time.
It's not necessarily great to read troves across a range of topics if it's overly sacrificing depth for breadth, as well as distracting you from what you should be doing.
There is much discretion in this regard, and what counts as a harmful distraction is somewhat subjective.
We’ll try to develop this newsletter so it's useful by developing a more focused content strategy, so we don’t overly sacrifice on depth.
Our strategy will be designed with what we think is useful for us to learn, and in turn, hopefully, you may learn something valuable.
Ensure you have a substantial distraction-free block of time during the day, if possible.
When changing habits, one might consider gradually reducing unproductive-screen-time, rather than reducing it abruptly (given the heightened risk of reverting to past habits). From there, find a healthy level that works for you.
“It is the misfortune of those with wide general interests that while they would like to have their fingers in every pie, they have one in none.”
That’s all for today, thanks for reading. See you on Friday.
