News
1) ‘We can’t find a single German or European applicant’: Deeptech startups feel bite of talent shortage (Sifted.EU)
According to SiftedEU, “The country lacks 310k professionals across science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), and the proportion of students studying in these areas is declining.”
2) YC Demo Day (TechCrunch)
An issue I have read about in healthcare is a shortage of labor supply in roles like nursing. This is increased by the rising ratio of the elderly population. A startup that participated in YC’s ‘Demo day’ is trying to reduce the time nurses spend on paperwork. TechCrunch says, “To help ease the documentation burden for nurses, Zha co-founded Andy AI with Max Akhterov, a former Apple staff engineer. Andy is essentially an AI-powered scribe, capturing and transcribing the spoken details of a patient visit and generating electronic health records.”
Niching down
As @levelsio writes in his e-book, “niches go against the ‘go big or go home’ attitude that the rise of startups in the mainstream media pushed from 2006 onward.”
Peter Theil shares this viewpoint, and points to Amazon and PayPal as examples.
He continues, “Most big companies started very small.” A heuristic sometimes mentioned is; recognizing what irrational biases people have about ideas or industries can be useful. In this case, @levelsio applies it to the size of a nice, by saying “people don’t like niches because they’re too small for peoples egos.”

Lab grown/plant based proteins
“Developing sustainable alternatives to animal-derived products is a growing area of interest and frustration for many consumers concerned about environmental impact, animal welfare, and health. While plant-based products have gained popularity, there is still a need for biotech solutions that can replicate the taste, texture, and nutritional content of animal-based proteins such as meat and dairy. A startup that focuses on creating lab-grown or cultured proteins using biotechnology could address this frustration.”
